This is the trip for anyone who wants both of Georgia's big mountain regions without choosing between them. The eastern half brings Tbilisi, a day of Kakhetian wine and a night in Stepantsminda at the foot of Mount Kazbek. You then travel west by way of Uplistsikhe to Kutaisi and follow the Enguri gorge up into Svaneti, where three nights in Mestia put you among medieval defence towers. From Mestia you head out to the Koruldi Lakes, spend time in the Svaneti Museum and drive to Ushguli, a cluster of UNESCO-listed villages at around 2,100 m beneath Shkhara, the highest peak in Georgia. The journey ends on the Black Sea coast at Batumi.

Three days involve long drives: the round trip to Kakheti, the climb from Kutaisi to Mestia, and the run down from Mestia to Batumi. On the other days you take things easy, and the walks, between two and four hours long, can always be shortened. The best months for Svaneti run from June into early October, once the snow has melted off the Koruldi track. You finish in Batumi, where you can fly out from the local airport or take the five-hour train back to Tbilisi.

Highlights

  • Three nights among the Svan watchtowers of Mestia
  • A full day in Ushguli, beneath Shkhara (5,193 m), the country's highest summit
  • The Koruldi Lakes, with Mount Ushba reflected on calm mornings
  • An overnight in Stepantsminda and a visit to Gergeti Trinity Church
  • A long Kakhetian lunch, with wine drawn from the family qvevri
  • Uplistsikhe, Gelati Monastery and the canyon at Martvili
  • Napoleon's death mask at the Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi, and Batumi on the Black Sea

The 4x4 reaches the Koruldi Lakes and the edge of Ushguli, and Gergeti can be driven too. Lamaria Church, the Uplistsikhe rock town and Ushguli's lanes are steep and uneven, so mobility-limited guests may see parts only from the vehicle or village centre; the Svaneti Museum and Dadiani Palace are easier visits.

Day by day

01Tbilisi from Metekhi to the Bridge of PeaceOvernight: Tbilisi

Following your airport pickup, the walk starts at Metekhi Church, rides the cable car to the walls of Narikala, then drops back down into Abanotubani, the bath district, where sulphur springs still supply the brick-domed bathhouses. The alleys of Kala lead on to Sioni Cathedral and to Anchiskhati, the oldest church in the city, and end on the Bridge of Peace as its lights switch on. Over dinner your guide introduces the food and toasts you will come to know during the next ten days.

Activity Walking 3 h, cable car includedMeals D
02A wine day in KakhetiOvernight: Tbilisi

Head east to Bodbe Monastery, the site of St Nino's grave, and continue to Sighnaghi, a compact hill town enclosed by 18th-century walls high above the Alazani Valley. After a walk along the ramparts, lunch is at a winemaking family's table, with wine poured straight from the qvevri, the clay vessels Georgians have used to ferment wine for around 8,000 years. In the afternoon you visit the country house of Alexander Chavchavadze at Tsinandali, with its museum rooms, historic cellar and park. You are back in Tbilisi for the evening.

03Mtskheta and the high road to KazbegiOvernight: Stepantsminda

After Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, follow the Georgian Military Highway north past the Zhinvali Reservoir and the walls of Ananuri. Above Gudauri there is a stop at the Friendship Monument, and then the road tops out at the Jvari Pass, 2,379 m above sea level. From Stepantsminda a 4x4 tackles the slope to Gergeti Trinity Church, a 14th-century building 2,170 m up, set against the bulk of Mount Kazbek. Prefer to go on foot? The old path up from the village takes around an hour and a half. You eat and sleep in Stepantsminda tonight.

04Gveleti Waterfall, Pasanauri khinkali and a sulphur bathOvernight: Tbilisi

Start the morning in the Dariali Gorge, which runs north to the Russian border, with the half-hour path up to the Gveleti Waterfall, which tumbles through a slender cleft in the granite. After a look at Dariali Monastery beside the Tergi, you head back south across the pass, pausing in Pasanauri for khinkali, the dumplings the village is known for. Late in the afternoon, soak in the hot sulphur water of an Abanotubani bathhouse, in a room of your own, a good way to rest your legs before the long journey west.

05West over the Rikoti Pass: Uplistsikhe, Gelati and BagratiOvernight: Kutaisi

Uplistsikhe, the cave town above the Mtkvari, is the first stop as you head west; walk its halls, its wine presses and the stepped street that climbs through the rock. Then the Rikoti Pass carries you into western Georgia, and Kutaisi appears by mid-afternoon. David IV the Builder founded Gelati Monastery in 1106, and its academy turned it into a seat of learning; the main church is still home to a 12th-century mosaic of the Virgin. Finish at Bagrati Cathedral, raised in 1003 on a hilltop with views over the city and the Rioni River.

06Martvili Canyon, the Enguri Dam and up into SvanetiOvernight: Mestia

An early departure from Kutaisi brings you to Martvili Canyon for a walk along the rim over the turquoise Abasha and, in season, a brief ride in an inflatable boat. Then on through Zugdidi and north up the Enguri gorge, with a stop at the Enguri Dam, a concrete arch roughly 270 m tall and among the highest of its kind in the world. For the next three hours the road winds up through forest into Upper Svaneti. You arrive in Mestia, about 1,500 m up, where stone towers raised between the 9th and 13th centuries stand above the village houses.

07Up to Koruldi by 4x4, then Svan treasures in the museumOvernight: Mestia

A 4x4 bounces up the rough track from Mestia to the Koruldi Lakes, around 2,740 m. These small tarns are best on a still morning, when the two summits of Ushba (4,710 m) appear upside down in the water. Walk around the shore and, if you like, part of the way back down on foot. In the afternoon the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography shows medieval icons, manuscripts and crosses of gold and silver that Svan churches kept safe for centuries. Then go inside a tower house to see how a family lived alongside its animals and withdrew into the tower whenever a blood feud flared up.

08Ushguli and Lamaria beneath ShkharaOvernight: Mestia

Ushguli lies 46 km east of Mestia. Its four villages, at roughly 2,100 m, with their towers and stone houses, are included in UNESCO's Upper Svaneti listing. Climb the hill above Zhibiani to the medieval church of Lamaria, where Shkhara (5,193 m), Georgia's highest mountain, closes off the valley behind. Wander among the towers of Chazhashi and, if your legs allow, spend two to four hours following the Enguri upstream in the direction of the Shkhara glacier. In the late afternoon you head back to Mestia.

09Down to Zugdidi's Dadiani Palace and along the coast to BatumiOvernight: Batumi

Retrace the Enguri gorge down to Zugdidi and the Dadiani Palace, home in the 19th century to the princes of Samegrelo. Among the portraits and icons in its museum is a bronze death mask of Napoleon, one of several that were cast, which came to the Dadiani family when they married into the Murats. Stroll through the botanical garden that surrounds the palace, then follow the coast south to Batumi. After dark, the seafront boulevard takes you to the Alphabet Tower and on to Ali and Nino, two steel figures that slowly move toward each other, pass through and draw apart again.

10Batumi's gardens, the Gonio fort and your flight home

Your last morning is in Batumi Botanical Garden. Laid out on the Green Cape in 1912, it gathers plants from Japan, the Himalayas and South America along its forest paths, with lookouts over the sea. Afterwards you head south to Gonio, a Roman fort whose walls and towers are still intact, close to where the Chorokhi River meets the sea. A farewell lunch of Adjarian khachapuri follows, and then a transfer to the airport in Batumi or to the station for your train to Tbilisi.

Good to know

Who it's for

  • Travellers who want both Kazbegi and Svaneti in one ten-day trip, without multi-day trekking
  • Photographers drawn to Svan defence towers, Ushba reflected in the Koruldi Lakes and Shkhara above Ushguli
  • Wine lovers who also want mountains, with a full day in Kakheti
  • Moderately fit visitors comfortable with three long driving days

Serious hikers should choose the Svaneti Trek: Mestia to Ushguli instead, while those wanting Vardzia and Borjomi as well will prefer Complete Georgia.

What to bring

  • A warm jacket and hat for the Koruldi Lakes at about 2,740 m and for evenings in Ushguli
  • Sturdy walking shoes for muddy village lanes and the Shkhara glacier path
  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it: the Enguri gorge road has many bends
  • A rain jacket for Martvili and for sudden mountain storms
  • Sun protection for long hours above 2,000 m
  • Some lari in small notes, as card machines are rare in Ushguli
Please note
  • Run from June to early October, when the Koruldi track is free of snow.
  • Three days involve long drives: to and from Kakheti, Kutaisi to Mestia, and Mestia to Batumi.
  • Storms can bring rockfall onto the Mestia road; we do not drive it in heavy rain and may adjust the plan.
  • The optional flight to Mestia is often cancelled in cloud, so the road remains the backup.

Questions about this tour

Is the road to Mestia safe?

Yes. The whole road from Zugdidi up to Mestia is asphalt, though it twists a lot and storms sometimes bring rocks down onto it. Our drivers travel it regularly, and we do not drive it during heavy rain.

Can we fly to or from Mestia instead of driving?

There are small-plane flights linking Mestia with Tbilisi and Kutaisi, but the timetable is limited and flights are often cancelled when cloud comes in. We are happy to book one for you, keeping the road journey as the fallback.

What is Ushguli like to visit?

It is a real farming community of a few hundred people, not an open-air museum: the lanes are muddy, cows wander between the towers and many houses double as guesthouses. A few towers hold small museums, and village cafes serve kubdari, a Svan pie stuffed with meat. Take warm layers, because it stays cool there even in summer.

Can the tour end in Tbilisi?

Yes. You can ride the train from Batumi to Tbilisi in about four hours, or we can drive you there in roughly six. A third option is to finish in Kutaisi straight after Svaneti and fly out from its airport.
