Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) stands alone on a grassy ridge at 2,170 m above Stepantsminda, with the glaciated cone of Mount Kazbek behind it. It is one of the best-known images of Georgia. The church and its separate bell tower were built in the 14th century from local stone, and a low wall surrounds the complex. It is an active church, and services are held here. On clear days the view takes in the Tergi valley and the town far below.

You can walk up from Stepantsminda in about 1 to 1.5 hours, climbing roughly 430 m through the village of Gergeti and up a steep path, or go by car or 4x4 taxi on the paved road. The best light is early morning, before clouds settle on Kazbek and before tour groups arrive. From the church, the trail continues north toward the Gergeti Glacier for those with a full day.

History

Gergeti Trinity Church was built in the 14th century, and its bell tower stands just south of the church, with the entrance to the complex in its base. It is the only cross-domed church in the Khevi region. In times of danger, relics from Mtskheta, including the cross of St Nino, are said to have been brought here for safekeeping. Religious life was suppressed in the Soviet period, and the church returned to active use after independence.
