Classic Georgia
Seven days on the route we recommend to most first-time visitors: Tbilisi at leisure, a two-night stay in the Kazbegi mountains, the cave city of Uplistsikhe with Gori, and a final night among the vineyards in Sighnaghi.
Old Tbilisi (Kala)Photo: Alexxx1979, CC BY-SA 4.0If this is your first trip to Georgia, this is the itinerary we usually suggest, and it moves slowly enough to be enjoyed. Tbilisi gets a whole day and two evenings, with time for the ancient gold in the National Museum. You then base yourself in Stepantsminda for two nights, long enough to hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church and walk into the Juta Valley instead of glimpsing Kazbegi through a car window. The return leg passes Uplistsikhe and Gori, and the last part of the week is in Kakheti: a night in Sighnaghi, lunch in a family qvevri cellar, then Tsinandali and the royal palace at Telavi.
Tbilisi hosts you for three nights, Stepantsminda for two and Sighnaghi for one. Your longest day on the road is around five hours, coming down from Kazbegi to Tbilisi by way of Gori. On foot it is easy to moderate going: you can hike to Gergeti or let a 4x4 do the climb for you. We run the tour from April to October, and in winter the route stays the same apart from the Juta walk, which we replace with something suited to the snow.

Day by day
01Evening stroll through Kala and SololakiOvernight: Tbilisi
At Tbilisi airport your driver is waiting, and the first stop is your hotel in the old centre. As the evening begins, your guide sets off with you through Kala and Sololaki, quarters famous for their carved wooden balconies, crosses the glass span of the Bridge of Peace and passes the sulphur bathhouses of Abanotubani with their brick cupolas. Dinner is beside the river and gives you a first taste of the food you will eat all week: khinkali, aubergine rolls filled with walnut paste, pkhali and mtsvadi hot off the grill. While you eat, your guide explains the plan for the days ahead.
02A full day in Tbilisi: Narikala, old churches and Colchian goldOvernight: Tbilisi
The day begins at Metekhi Church on its clifftop. Next, a cable car carries you over the rooftops to Narikala Fortress, with the Mtkvari valley below and the Mother of Georgia statue standing guard on the ridge. Descending on foot, you come to the Leghvtakhevi waterfall, then walk among the old houses to Sioni Cathedral, then on to Anchiskhati, a basilica dating from the 6th century. After lunch, the Georgian National Museum opens its treasury, where gold jewellery from ancient Colchis and Iberia is on display. Later you can hunt for Soviet badges, enamelware and old cameras among the stalls of the Dry Bridge Market. In the evening, choose between a soak in the sulphur baths and a glass in one of the city's wine bars.
03Mtskheta, Ananuri and over the Jvari PassOvernight: Stepantsminda
Mtskheta, half an hour from Tbilisi, served as the old capital, and the Georgian kingdom took up Christianity here during the 4th century. You see three places: Jvari Monastery high above the meeting of the rivers, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and the convent of Samtavro. Beyond Mtskheta the highway follows the Aragvi to Ananuri, the 17th-century stronghold of the dukes of Aragvi, whose church is covered in elaborate stone carving, and then snakes upward past Gudauri and the Friendship Monument to the 2,379 m saddle of the Jvari Pass. Coming down the far side into the Tergi valley, you reach Stepantsminda, at roughly 1,750 m, with enough daylight left for a short stroll before dinner.
04Hike to Gergeti, then the meadows of JutaOvernight: Stepantsminda
The old footpath from Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church climbs for about an hour and a half, first through birch woods, then across open pasture, to the 14th-century church at 2,170 m; a 4x4 can do the climb for you if you prefer. Stand on the terrace and Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) rises straight up behind the church. After lunch the car takes you to Juta, a hamlet some 2,150 m up under the jagged Chaukhi massif, where an easy path follows the stream through the meadows. Dinner is back at your hotel in Stepantsminda.
05Down from the mountains to Gori and UplistsikheOvernight: Tbilisi
An early departure takes you out of the mountains, south and then west along the Mtkvari, to Gori, home of the Stalin Museum. Opened in 1957, it keeps the house where he was born plus the armoured railway carriage that carried him, and your guide adds the parts of the story the exhibits skip. Uplistsikhe is a short drive away. People used this rock-cut town from as early as the 1st millennium BC up to the 13th century, and you can still walk through its halls and wine presses and up its paved main street to a brick basilica. By late afternoon you are on the road back to Tbilisi.
06Into wine country: Bodbe and a night in SighnaghiOvernight: Sighnaghi
Heading east, you stop first at Bodbe Monastery, where St Nino rests among cypress trees above the Alazani Valley. Once you have checked in at your Sighnaghi hotel, walk the town walls that King Erekle II built during the 1760s, with the Greater Caucasus on the far horizon. For lunch you drive to a village close by, where a family who make their own wine are waiting. They lead you to the clay qvevri buried in the cellar floor, describe how the grapes ferment together with skins and stems, and fill your glass with Rkatsiteli, Kisi and Saperavi. Your evening in Sighnaghi is free.
07Tsinandali, Telavi's royal palace and the drive home
Follow the Alazani Valley to Tsinandali, the estate of Alexander Chavchavadze, a 19th-century poet and general. His cellar keeps a collection of old bottles, and the English-style park deserves an hour of your time. In Telavi you see Batonis Tsikhe, the fortified palace of King Erekle II, and a giant plane tree in the old town that is thought to be about 900 years old. A farewell lunch with local wine follows, and then you drive back to Tbilisi to catch your flight.

Good to know
Who it's for
- First-time visitors with a week who want Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Uplistsikhe and Kakheti at an unhurried pace
- Walkers who want the choice of climbing to Gergeti on foot rather than by 4x4
- Museum lovers: a full Tbilisi day includes the gold of the National Museum
- Families with older children and couples who like two-night stays in each base
If you want the Black Sea, Svaneti or Vardzia, extend to the Grand Tour with Svaneti or Complete Georgia; if your week must be all about wine, Wine & Supra suits better.
What to bring
- Proper walking shoes for the 400 m climb to Gergeti and the Juta meadows
- A warm jacket for Stepantsminda, where evenings are chilly even in July
- A daypack and refillable bottle for the Kazbegi walking day
- A headscarf and wrap skirt (women) or long trousers (men) for monasteries
- Sun protection: hat, glasses and cream for the open mountain slopes
- Space in your luggage for wine bought in Kakheti, wrapped for the hold
- Snow normally keeps the Juta road shut from about December to April, and winter dates get a snow-friendly walk instead.
- The longest drive is about five hours, coming down from Kazbegi through Gori.
- In Kazbegi, clouds often gather on Mount Kazbek by early afternoon, so we aim for Gergeti in the morning.
- Visitors to Georgia need travel health insurance from 2026; keep a copy handy at arrival.

Questions about this tour
Is Classic Georgia suitable for children?
Yes. None of the walks is long, several are optional, and most children love the cable car, the bumpy 4x4 trip up to Gergeti and clambering around the caves of Uplistsikhe. Child seats are available if you ask in advance. For a trip built more around kids, have a look at Georgia for Families.
How fit do I need to be?
An ordinary level of fitness is fine. The biggest walk is the path from Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church, a gain of roughly 400 m over an hour and a half, and a 4x4 can replace it. Old Tbilisi has plenty of slopes and cobbles, so pack shoes you are happy to walk in all day.
Can we add Svaneti or the Black Sea?
Yes. Svaneti needs about three extra days because of the long drive through Kutaisi, while Batumi needs one or two. If you want both, our Grand Tour with Svaneti or the Complete Georgia itinerary already joins them to this classic route.
What is the weather like in Kazbegi?
At about 1,750 m, Stepantsminda runs several degrees cooler than Tbilisi. In summer the days are mild and the nights fresh, and cloud tends to gather around Mount Kazbek from early afternoon, so mornings usually give the clearest views. Pack something warm even for a July trip.
