Stalin Museum
Soviet-era museum in Gori devoted to Stalin, with the wooden house where he was born and his armoured railway carriage.
Stalin MuseumPhoto: Stolbovsky, CC BY-SA 3.0The Joseph Stalin Museum stands on Stalin Avenue in central Gori, in a grand building begun in 1951 and dedicated to him in 1957. The museum itself was founded in 1937, during his lifetime. Inside, six halls trace his life in rough chronological order through photographs, paintings, documents, newspaper articles, gifts and personal belongings, including furniture from his office. The display ends with one of the twelve death masks made after he died in 1953.
In front of the museum, a classical pavilion shelters the small wooden house where Stalin was born in 1878 and lived for his first four years. Beside it stands his green, armour-plated Pullman railway carriage, which he used from 1941, including for the journeys to the Tehran and Yalta conferences. The presentation still largely reflects its Soviet origins and says little about repression, so reading about the period beforehand helps.
History
The museum was founded in 1937, and its main building was begun in 1951 and dedicated to Stalin in 1957, after his death. The railway carriage was brought here in 1985. After the 2008 war the government announced plans to turn the museum into a Museum of Russian Aggression, but in 2012 the Gori municipal assembly dropped the plans. Historians have since proposed adding critical context to the original displays.
