Uplistsikhe, Gori & Mtskheta Day Trip
Head west of Tbilisi for the day: walk the rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe, see the Stalin Museum in Gori, and finish at Mtskheta's ancient churches.
UplistsikhePhoto: Supanut Arunoprayote, CC BY 4.0Three of the key sights west of Tbilisi fill this private day, and together they run from pre-Christian times to the Soviet era. Uplistsikhe, hollowed out of a sandstone ridge over the Mtkvari River, has halls, wine presses and a chamber people usually call the theatre, and it was lived in from the 1st millennium BC right up to the 13th century. Gori's Stalin Museum preserves the house where the dictator was born and his railway carriage, while Gori Fortress gives a view across the town. On the return you stop in Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, for Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
Allow about nine hours, three of them on the road, mostly on a good motorway. Uplistsikhe needs moderate walking on uneven rock that turns slippery after rain; elsewhere you only walk short distances. The trip works in any season. In summer the bare rock of Uplistsikhe gets very hot by afternoon, so we go there first and keep the shady churches of Mtskheta for later in the day, when it is cooler.

Day by day
01Rock town, Stalin's Gori and Mtskheta's churches
Depart Tbilisi around 9 am for the drive of about an hour and a quarter west to Uplistsikhe, timed to beat the heat. Climb through the cave town along its main street, past halls with carved ceilings and wine cellars, to the brick basilica at the top. Gori is 15 minutes away. At the Stalin Museum you see the modest house where Stalin was born, now encased in a marble pavilion, and the armoured railway carriage he travelled in; afterwards, walk up to Gori Fortress for the view. Following lunch, head back east to Mtskheta to visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery on its hill above the rivers, returning to Tbilisi in the early evening.

Good to know
Who it's for
- History lovers who want three eras in a day: an ancient rock town, Stalin's birthplace and medieval churches
- Visitors interested in the Soviet past and how Georgia presents it today
- Travellers who prefer good motorway driving to mountain roads
- Anyone who has seen Mtskheta only briefly and wants another, calmer look
If uneven rock and heat put you off, the Mtskheta Day Trip covers the churches with gentler walking and a much shorter drive.
What to bring
- Shoes with good grip for the smooth, sloping rock at Uplistsikhe, which is slippery when wet
- A sun hat and plenty of water, because the rock town has almost no shade
- A headscarf, skirt or long trousers for Svetitskhoveli and Jvari
- A rain jacket in spring and autumn, when showers pass through Kartli
- A warm layer in winter, as the open ridge at Uplistsikhe catches the wind
- Uplistsikhe has rough steps and drops without railings. Children need to be watched closely.
- The Stalin Museum presents its subject in a largely uncritical, Soviet-era way. Your guide adds the wider historical picture.
- Gori is near the line of the occupied Tskhinvali region. The tour stays well inside the area open to visitors.
- In summer we reach Uplistsikhe early to avoid the midday heat.

Questions about this tour
How long do you need at Uplistsikhe?
Around an hour and a half lets you cover the whole site at a relaxed pace while your guide explains the purpose of each chamber. In summer, bring a hat and plenty of water, because the bare rock offers almost no shade at all.
Can we skip the Stalin Museum?
Yes. Some guests would rather use that time for Ateni Sioni, a 7th-century church in a valley south of Gori with fine wall paintings, or for a winery visit in Kartli. Just let us know when you book.
