From the Mountains to the Sea
Eight days that drop from the glaciers above Kazbegi to the palms of Batumi, with Borjomi's spa park, the cave monastery of Vardzia and the monasteries of Kutaisi along the way.
Metekhi ChurchPhoto: Alexxx1979, CC BY-SA 4.0Georgia's landscapes shift quickly, and this route follows them all the way from the glaciers of the Greater Caucasus down to the subtropical coast of the Black Sea. After a first day in Tbilisi you spend two nights in Stepantsminda, which gives you Gergeti Trinity Church and a full walk in the Juta Valley. Then, going west, you pause at Uplistsikhe, a town hewn from rock, before a two-night stay in Borjomi, the old spa resort. Borjomi is your base for Vardzia, the cave monastery Queen Tamar's court created in the 12th century, with Khertvisi Fortress and Rabati Castle as stops along the road. The final days cover the monasteries around Kutaisi, Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Batumi.
There are four hotel changes in all. The longest stretch of driving, about four and a half hours, takes you from Kazbegi to Borjomi with a stop at Uplistsikhe. The busiest days on foot are the Juta hike and the scramble through the cave rooms at Vardzia, and both sit at an easy to moderate level. You finish in Batumi, where there are international flights and a train back to Tbilisi that takes about four hours on the fastest service. Come between May and October, the months when the Juta road is open.

Tour facts
Most monasteries, Borjomi's park entrance, Rabati Castle's lower courtyard and Batumi's boulevard are reachable with little effort. Vardzia, Uplistsikhe, the Juta trail and Prometheus Cave involve many steps and uneven rock, so this route suits limited mobility only in part; we can arrange viewpoints and spa time on those days.

Day by day
01First afternoon in Tbilisi's old quarterOvernight: Tbilisi
Once you have been met at the airport, your guide takes you on foot around Old Tbilisi, beginning at Metekhi Church high above the Mtkvari River. The cable car hoists you up to Narikala Fortress; walking down again, you pass the sulphur baths of Abanotubani and reach the Leghvtakhevi waterfall in its little gorge. Narrow lanes then lead to Sioni Cathedral and Anchiskhati, the city's oldest surviving church, and you finish by crossing the Bridge of Peace into Rike Park. A welcome dinner in the evening introduces Georgian cooking and the toasts of the supra.
02The Military Highway to StepantsmindaOvernight: Stepantsminda
Mtskheta, once the capital of Kartli, gives you your first two stops, Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, before you turn north onto the Georgian Military Highway. Ananuri, a 17th-century fortress whose two churches look over the Zhinvali Reservoir, is the next break, followed by the Friendship Monument near Gudauri, a curved mosaic wall above the sheer drop of the Aragvi gorge. Beyond the Jvari Pass, at 2,379 m, lies the valley of the Tergi. In Stepantsminda you switch to a 4x4 for the steep track to Gergeti Trinity Church and its view of Mount Kazbek, and then you check in for two nights.
03A day on foot below the Chaukhi towersOvernight: Stepantsminda
Drive to Sno, a village where a local sculptor has carved huge stone heads of Georgian poets and writers, and continue up the valley road to Juta, about 2,150 m up. From here the trail rises gently through summer wildflower meadows toward the Chaukhi massif, a wall of rocky spires reaching 3,842 m. The round trip to the base of the massif is four to five hours on foot, with about 500 m of ascent, and it is easy to turn it into a shorter walk. Picnic beside the stream at lunchtime and return to Stepantsminda late in the afternoon.
04Westward: Uplistsikhe and the spa town of BorjomiOvernight: Borjomi
Leave Kazbegi in the morning, drive south past Mtskheta and then west through the Mtkvari valley. At Uplistsikhe you explore a town carved out of a sandstone ridge, whose people stayed from the 1st millennium BC right through to the 13th century: halls, wine presses and, at the very top, a brick basilica. Then it is on to Borjomi, a wooded gorge where a spa town grew up in the 19th century around springs whose salty mineral water became known across the former Soviet Union. In the evening, wander through Central Park and drink the water straight from the spring.
05Vardzia cave monastery, with Khertvisi and RabatiOvernight: Borjomi
Heading south, the road threads the Mtkvari gorge and passes Khertvisi, among the oldest fortresses in Georgia, perched where the Paravani joins the Mtkvari. Vardzia itself was hollowed out of Mount Erusheti's cliffs late in the 12th century, in the time of King Giorgi III and then Queen Tamar. Hundreds of rooms survive, stacked over several levels and joined by tunnels and stairways, clustered around the Church of the Dormition, where Tamar's portrait is still on the wall. On the way back you visit Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, restored so that a mosque, a church and a citadel share one ring of walls.
06Borjomi park by cable car, then Gelati and BagratiOvernight: Kutaisi
Your morning belongs to Borjomi's Central Park: a cable car rises to the plateau above town, and at the far end of the forest path there are warm sulphur pools. After that the Rikoti Pass leads you over into western Georgia. Your first stop near Kutaisi is Gelati Monastery, the foundation of David IV the Builder in 1106, where frescoes cover the church walls and a 12th-century mosaic fills the apse. Bagrati Cathedral comes next, its walls raised in 1003 on a hilltop above the Rioni. Spend the evening exploring the centre and the busy Green Bazaar.
07Underground at Prometheus, on the water at Martvili, then BatumiOvernight: Batumi
A 20 km drive north-west brings you to Prometheus Cave, where a route of more than a kilometre winds through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites, lit so that their colours show. Next comes Martvili Canyon in Samegrelo: you walk the path over the turquoise Abasha and, in the warm months, drift through the gorge in an inflatable boat. Lunch is Megrelian, elarji and kharcho, and then the road carries you to the Black Sea and your hotel in Batumi. Walk the seafront boulevard in the evening as the lights come on.
08Last morning on the coast: Botanical Garden and Gonio
Make an early start at the Botanical Garden on Batumi's Green Cape, founded in 1912, where trails lead down through bamboo, magnolias and eucalyptus to the shore. Then head south to Gonio Fortress, which the Romans built as Apsaros; its walls and towers surround an excavated garrison and a grave that tradition assigns to the apostle Matthias. After a lunch of Adjarian khachapuri, your driver drops you at Batumi airport, or at the railway station if you are taking the train to Tbilisi.

Good to know
Who it's for
- Active travellers who want a real hike at Juta plus Vardzia's cave city in one route
- Visitors who love variety: glaciers, a spa town, limestone caves and subtropical gardens
- People flying out of Batumi or happy with the train back to the capital
- Repeat or curious travellers keen to see the south via Khertvisi and Rabati
Travellers who prefer one base and short drives may enjoy Classic Georgia more, and anyone wanting Svaneti should choose the Grand Tour with Svaneti.
What to bring
- Hiking shoes and a daypack for the Juta walk of four to five hours
- Layers for big temperature swings, from cool Kazbegi mornings to humid Batumi afternoons
- A rain shell, essential in the west and handy in the mountains
- Swimwear for the open-air sulphur pools in Borjomi and the sea in Batumi
- A head torch or phone light for darker tunnel sections at Vardzia
- Respectful clothing for monasteries, including Vardzia's working church
- We run this trip from May to October because the Juta road is often blocked by snow until late May; early in the season the walk may move to the Truso or Sno valleys.
- There are four hotel changes, and the Kazbegi to Borjomi day takes about four and a half hours.
- Vardzia has narrow tunnels and ledges with railings; anyone uneasy in tight spaces can use the outer walkways.
- The Martvili boat depends on water levels and is cancelled after heavy rain.
- One small section of Vardzia has been closed since a rockfall in 2026; the bulk of the complex is still open.

Questions about this tour
How strenuous is the Vardzia visit?
Moderately. Expect stairs, a few narrow tunnels and some exposed ledges protected by railings, adding up to roughly 100 m of ascent. At an easy pace most people see it in about two hours. If confined spaces bother you, skip the tunnels and stay on the outer walkways.
Can we swim in Batumi?
Yes. Between roughly June and September the water is warm enough for a swim. The beaches in Batumi are made of pebbles, not sand, so bring water shoes if you have them. If you want proper time on the beach, add an extra night in Batumi at the end.
Can the tour run in spring or autumn?
Yes, and May and October are good months, with fewer people and mild weather on the western side. Until late May snow may still block the road to Juta; if it does, we walk lower down instead, in the Truso or Sno valleys.
Why stay two nights in Borjomi rather than one?
Vardzia lies about two hours south of Borjomi, and coming back through Akhaltsikhe turns the trip into a full day. With two nights in the same hotel you avoid packing up on that long day, and you still have a morning in the park before you move on.
