Tbilisi to Mestia

About 460 km across the whole country, west on the main highway to Zugdidi and then 135 km up the Enguri gorge into Svaneti. It is a long day by road, a slow day by train and minibus, or one hour in a small plane when the weather allows.

Mestia sits at about 1,500 m in Upper Svaneti, and there is no short way in. By road you cross Georgia from east to west on the E60 to Zugdidi, then turn north into the mountains past the Enguri Dam. The last third is a winding but fully paved road along the river.

Many travellers split the journey, either by flying one way or by sleeping a night in Kutaisi or Zugdidi. If you travel by private car, the length becomes an advantage: you can stop at Uplistsikhe or Gelati, walk into Martvili Canyon and see the Dadiani Palace, then arrive in Mestia for dinner. Over two days the trip is a small tour of western Georgia.

Tips for this route
  • If you can, fly one way and drive the other: you get the mountain views from the air and the stops on the road.
  • Split the drive with a night in Kutaisi: Gelati and the canyons fill the first day, and Martvili, Zugdidi and the Enguri gorge the second.
  • In winter the Enguri gorge road stays open but snow and rockfall can slow it badly. Plan a spare day before your flight home.
  • Book flights the day sales open: the planes carry fewer than 20 passengers.

Tbilisi to Mestia: FAQ

How far is Mestia from Tbilisi?

About 460 km by road via Zugdidi, or 8 to 9 hours of driving without long stops. The flight from Natakhtari takes about an hour.

Is there still a direct minibus from Tbilisi to Mestia?

In 2026 sources still describe one early-morning departure, mainly in summer, taking 9 to 10 hours. A rule restricting minivans on routes over 150 km was announced for 2025, but reports from 2026 disagree on whether it is enforced, so check locally before relying on it.

What if my Mestia flight is cancelled?

The airline usually moves you to the next flight, which may be days later. Have a road plan ready: the train to Zugdidi and a minibus, or a private car.

Can I drive to Mestia in an ordinary car?

Yes. The road from Zugdidi to Mestia is paved. A 4x4 is only needed for the summer track from Ushguli to Lentekhi or in deep snow.
