Ureki is the best-known beach resort in Guria, on the Black Sea about 60 km north of Batumi. Its fame rests on the sand: unlike the pebble beaches of Batumi and much of the coast, Ureki has wide beaches of black sand rich in magnetite, the iron mineral that gives the beachfront district its name, Magnetiti. Many Georgians believe the magnetic sand helps with heart, joint and other problems, and you will see people burying themselves in it. The scientific evidence is thin, but the sand is soft underfoot.

The water is shallow and shelves gently, so you can wade a long way out, which makes Ureki popular with families. The season runs from May to September, and July and August are crowded, with beach bars, umbrellas for rent, water slides, jet skis and plenty of traffic and nightlife. Outside summer most restaurants close and the town goes quiet. For a calmer stay, look at Grigoleti to the north or Shekvetili to the south.

What to see and do

  • Swim in shallow, gently shelving water that suits children
  • Try the black magnetic sand of the Magnetiti beach district
  • Rent a beach umbrella, or try kitesurfing and jet skis
  • Take a day trip to Kolkheti National Park and Paliastomi Lake to the north

How to visit

Getting there

Ureki is about 300 km from Tbilisi, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by car, and 60 km from Batumi. Its station on the Tbilisi-Batumi railway is about 1.5 km from the beach, and long-distance buses and marshrutkas stop on the highway.

When to go

July to September; June for fewer crowds. Plan 1-7 days here.

Local tips
  • Book July and August stays well ahead
  • Do not leave valuables unattended on the beach
  • Most restaurants and cafés open only in the bathing season

Ureki: FAQ

Is Ureki good for children?

Yes. The sea is shallow and shelves gently, the sand is soft and lifeguards are on duty in season. It gets very crowded in July and August.

Does the magnetic sand in Ureki really heal?

Many people believe the magnetite-rich sand helps with heart and joint problems, but there is little scientific evidence. Enjoy it as a sandy beach rather than a medical treatment.
