Giorgoba (St George's Day)
The day of Georgia's patron saint, celebrated with liturgies, feasts and pilgrimages to St George's churches.
St George appears everywhere in Georgia, on the national coat of arms, in hundreds of church names and in countless family names. The church keeps two feasts for him: 6 May in spring and 23 November in winter. The November date, which remembers his martyrdom, is a public holiday.
Families feast, churches named after the saint hold services, and in the mountains some communities still offer sacrifices at old St George shrines.
- Expect closed offices and busy restaurants in the evening.
- Late November is quiet for tourism; mountain roads may already have snow.
