Erekle II ruled Kakheti and then the united kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti in the 18th century, and his statue on horseback stands in front of the palace in Telavi. On Erekleoba the town remembers him with concerts, exhibitions and church services.

It is a local day rather than a tourist event, but it falls in a quiet, golden week in Kakheti after the harvest, when cellars are full of new wine.

Tips from your host
  • Check the Telavi municipality for the programme.
  • Early November is good for cellar visits, with the new wine just finished.
