New Year Lights and Markets in Tbilisi
Festive lights, a big tree and holiday markets that keep central Tbilisi busy through the winter holidays.
Rustaveli AvenuePhoto: George Kvizhinadze, CC BY-SA 2.0From mid-December the city lights up Rustaveli Avenue and the main squares and puts up a large New Year tree. Wooden market stalls sell mulled wine, churchkhela, gozinaki, crafts and toys, and there are concerts on outdoor stages.
The festive season runs straight through Orthodox Christmas on 7 January and the Old New Year on the 14th, so a winter city break here gets several holidays in one trip.
- Dress warmly: evenings are often near 0 C.
- Combine with a sulphur bath in Abanotubani on a cold day.
