Only about 500 km separate Georgia's eastern and western ends, yet the two halves of the country have quite different characters. The east is dry, covered in broad vineyards, and makes its wine in qvevri. The west is green and damp, with Colchian forest, limestone gorges, more heavily spiced food and the Black Sea. On this tour you drive the full width of the country. Tbilisi and Kakheti come first, then Mtskheta and the cave town of Uplistsikhe on the road to Kutaisi, followed by the limestone caves and gorges of Imereti and Samegrelo, with Batumi on the coast as the finale.

You sleep in just three places, Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi, so there are only two hotel changes. Day three has the longest drive, about four and a half hours including stops. The trip finishes in Batumi, whose airport has international flights; if you are flying home from Tbilisi, we can book you on the train or drive you back. This route leaves out the high mountains, so if Kazbegi or Svaneti are on your list, look at Classic Georgia or the Grand Tour.

Highlights

  • Narikala Fortress and the old streets of Tbilisi

Batumi's seafront boulevard is level and paved, and Bagrati, Gelati and Bodbe have parking near the church. Prometheus Cave, the Martvili trails and Uplistsikhe involve stairs and uneven ground; we can replace them with more time in Kutaisi, the Botanical Garden's electric car and the Gonio walls, which are on flat ground.

Day by day

01Tbilisi: across the Bridge of Peace and up to NarikalaOvernight: Tbilisi

After the airport pickup, you cross the Bridge of Peace on foot and enter the Old Town. Up on the hill, reached by cable car, Narikala Fortress overlooks the river, the bath domes of Abanotubani and the Mother of Georgia statue on her ridge. The path back down passes the Leghvtakhevi waterfall, and then the lanes take you past churches, a mosque and a synagogue that stand only a few minutes' walk from one another. Look into the 6th-century Anchiskhati Basilica on the way to dinner, which brings khinkali, aubergine badrijani rolled around walnut paste and your first glass of Saperavi.

02East into Kakheti: Bodbe, Sighnaghi and the Chavchavadze estateOvernight: Tbilisi

Two hours on the road bring you to Bodbe Monastery, where you see the tomb of St Nino, and then to Sighnaghi, the walled town above the Alazani Valley. After walking part of its 18th-century ramparts, you drive down into the valley to have lunch with a family who make wine. They show you how the grapes ferment together with their skins in qvevri sunk below the cellar floor, and you taste amber and red wines drawn straight from the jars. The afternoon brings you to Tsinandali, where the 19th-century poet Alexander Chavchavadze lived and where his cellar was one of the first in Georgia to put wine into bottles. You return to Tbilisi in the evening.

03Across the Rikoti Pass to Kutaisi, via Mtskheta and UplistsikheOvernight: Kutaisi

Leaving Tbilisi, you stop first in Mtskheta, where Jvari Monastery looks down on the junction of two rivers and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral rises from the old town. Further west, Uplistsikhe waits with its cave halls, cellars and a paved street hewn from the sandstone above the Mtkvari. After lunch you cross the Rikoti Pass, the low ridge that splits Georgia into east and west, and as you drop toward the Rioni the dry hills turn into forest and tea-green valleys. You reach Kutaisi, the country's third-largest city, in the early evening.

04Around Kutaisi: Gelati, Motsameta, Prometheus Cave and BagratiOvernight: Kutaisi

Begin at Gelati Monastery, which King David IV the Builder established in 1106 and where he lies buried under the south gate. Its academy made it a seat of medieval learning, and inside the main church a 12th-century mosaic shows the Virgin and Child. Close by, Motsameta Monastery clings to a cliff over a loop of the Tskaltsitela River. After lunch you walk through Prometheus Cave, found in 1984, following a route of over a kilometre that leads past stalactites and lakes deep underground; in season a short boat ride ends the visit. The last stop is Bagrati Cathedral, raised above the city in 1003.

05Samegrelo's Martvili Canyon, then the coast at BatumiOvernight: Batumi

An hour's drive north-west into Samegrelo brings you to Martvili Canyon, a slim limestone gorge carved out by the Abasha River. Follow the path along the top and, during the warmer months, ride an inflatable boat on the water between the walls. On a hill above the town, Martvili Monastery's church goes back to the 7th century, with a rebuilding in the 10th. Lunch is Megrelian: elarji, a cornmeal porridge stretched with melted sulguni cheese, and spicy kharcho. Then it is on to Batumi and the Black Sea, where an evening stroll along the seafront boulevard leads to the Alphabet Tower and the moving steel statue of Ali and Nino.

06Green Cape gardens, Roman Gonio and departure

Your morning is spent in Batumi's Botanical Garden, planted in 1912 on the Green Cape just north of the city, where paths lead through plant collections from several continents and open onto views of the sea. Next, head south, almost to the Turkish border, for Gonio Fortress, the Roman stronghold of Apsaros, whose walls and towers still stand and where local tradition places the grave of the apostle Matthias. Lunch is Adjarian khachapuri, a boat of bread filled with cheese, egg and butter, and afterwards you transfer to Batumi airport or the train for Tbilisi.

Good to know

Who it's for

  • Travellers who want to see the change from dry Kakhetian vineyards to the green, humid west in one trip
  • Cave and canyon lovers: Uplistsikhe, Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon all feature
  • People flying home from Batumi, or happy to take the train back to Tbilisi
  • Food-curious visitors who want to compare Kakhetian cooking with Megrelian and Adjarian dishes

Anyone who came for high mountains should pick Classic Georgia or the Grand Tour with Svaneti, because this route deliberately skips Kazbegi and Svaneti.

What to bring

  • A compact umbrella or rain jacket: western Georgia and Batumi get frequent showers even in summer
  • A light jumper for the chilly underground halls of Prometheus
  • Non-slip shoes for the wet walkways at Martvili and the cave floor
  • Swimwear and water shoes if you hope for a dip on Batumi's pebble beach
  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees for Gelati, Bodbe and Svetitskhoveli
  • Insect repellent for warm evenings in the lowlands of Samegrelo
Please note
  • Expect the Tbilisi to Kutaisi day to be your longest in the car, roughly four and a half hours with breaks.
  • The Martvili boat runs only in the warmer months and stops after heavy rain; the rim trail stays open as the alternative.
  • The trip ends on the coast. If your flight leaves from Tbilisi, plan for the train or a drive of roughly six hours.
  • Batumi lies close to the Turkish border, but this tour does not cross it.

Questions about this tour

Can the tour end in Tbilisi instead of Batumi?

Yes. We can reserve seats on the Batumi to Tbilisi train, a journey of about four hours on the fastest service, or have the driver take you back by road in around six. Another option is to run the whole route the other way round, flying into Batumi and finishing in Tbilisi.

Does the Martvili Canyon boat ride run all year?

No. Boats operate in the warm half of the year, roughly May through October, and are suspended after heavy rain raises the river. At other times you can still follow the trail and visit the viewing points above the gorge.

How different is the food in western Georgia?

Quite different. Cooks in the west lean harder on walnuts, chilli and fresh herbs, and cornbread often takes the place of wheat bread. Samegrelo is the home of elarji and fiery adjika, while Adjara gives you its famous boat-shaped khachapuri. In the glass, Kakhetian Saperavi gives way to lighter whites such as Tsolikouri.

Why does this tour not include Kazbegi?

Kazbegi is due north of Tbilisi, off the east to west line this route follows, so including it would add two days of driving. If you want mountains as well as the coast, the Grand Tour with Svaneti and Complete Georgia both cover them.
