Route guide
Kutaisi to Mestia
About 240 km from Kutaisi via Martvili or Senaki and Zugdidi, then up the Enguri gorge. Around 4.5 hours of driving, which leaves time for a canyon walk and the Enguri Dam on the way.
Kutaisi is the natural springboard for Svaneti, especially if you land at Kutaisi airport. The road heads west across the Colchis lowland to Zugdidi, where it turns north and follows the Enguri river for the final 135 km.
With a private car you can take the quieter road through Martvili, which puts a canyon and a hilltop monastery on the way at almost no extra distance. In summer there is also a wilder alternative over the Zagari Pass via Lentekhi and Ushguli, suitable only for a 4x4.
