Fabrika

A former Soviet sewing factory in Chugureti turned into a hostel, courtyard bars, cafes, small shops and a street-art hub.

Fabrika

Fabrika is a converted Soviet-era sewing factory at 8 Egnate Ninoshvili Street in the Chugureti district, a few blocks from Marjanishvili metro. Since it opened in July 2016 it has become a hub of Tbilisi's young creative scene. The building holds a large hostel and hotel rooms, co-working space and studios, while the courtyard is lined with bars, cafes, a wine bar, small design and vintage shops, a record store and a film lab, all under walls covered in murals. On warm evenings the courtyard fills with locals and travellers until late.

Fabrika has also helped revive the streets around it. Ninoshvili Street and nearby Aghmashenebeli Avenue, the restored 19th-century boulevard of the old German quarter, now have plenty of cafes, bakeries and bars. Come for an evening drink, a coffee during the day or to see the street art. It is also a good place to stay if you want a social atmosphere and quick metro links to the centre.

History

In the Soviet period the building was the Nino sewing factory, making women's clothing. It closed after the collapse of the Soviet Union and stood empty for years. Local architects converted it into a hostel and creative space, keeping the raw concrete and the Soviet bas-relief above the entrance, and the owners invited street artists and muralists to paint the grey walls. Fabrika opened in July 2016.
