Victory Day
A public holiday remembering the end of the Second World War in Europe, when families honour Georgian veterans.
Around 700,000 Georgians served in the Soviet army during the Second World War, and roughly half did not return. On 9 May families lay flowers at war memorials across the country, especially at Vake Park in Tbilisi, where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands.
It is a public holiday. In 2026 it fell on the same Saturday as the New Wine Festival, so Tbilisi was busy with both events.
- Most banks and offices close.
- Expect small ceremonies at war memorials in the morning.
