National Unity Day (9 April)
A day of remembrance for the people killed by Soviet troops at a peaceful rally on Rustaveli Avenue in 1989.
Rustaveli AvenuePhoto: George Kvizhinadze, CC BY-SA 2.0In the early hours of 9 April 1989 Soviet soldiers broke up a hunger strike and rally for independence outside the government building on Rustaveli Avenue, and 21 people died. Two years later, on 9 April 1991, Georgia's Supreme Council declared the restoration of independence. The day now carries both meanings.
People lay flowers at the memorial on Rustaveli Avenue, near Parliament, through the day. It is a public holiday and a sober one, so treat the memorial with respect.
- Expect flowers and small gatherings at the memorial near Parliament.
- Banks and offices close; most sights stay open.
