Lomisoba is one of the biggest highland feasts in eastern Georgia. Thousands of pilgrims climb from the village of Mleta, below Gudauri, to the St George church of Lomisi, which stands at about 2,200 m on a ridge between the Aragvi and Ksani valleys. Many walk through the night, some carry lambs or offerings, and families picnic on the slopes after the service.

The path is steep and about 6 km each way, and in a hot or wet year it becomes slippery and crowded. If you want to join, go with a local guide, start early and carry water and a headlamp.

Tips from your host
  • Wear proper boots; the trail is steep and muddy after rain.
  • Women traditionally do not enter some shrine areas; follow local guidance.
  • Combine with a night in Gudauri or Stepantsminda.
